Don’t miss this powerful evening of art, memory, and connection—an opportunity to engage deeply with one of Canada’s most empathetic and thought‑provoking voices in dementia care.
Tony Luciani is a celebrated Canadian artist whose deeply moving work explores the experience of aging and dementia. After four decades as an award-winning painter, in 2014 Tony picked up a camera to document the profound journey of his mother, Elia, who was in the early stages of dementia. What began as casual snapshots soon evolved into a five‑year collaborative photographic series titled “Mamma, In the Meantime”, in which Elia photobombed her son’s frames and joyfully embraced acting, dressing up, and posing—sparking transformative memories for both of them.
Their sessions became therapeutic, reigniting Elia’s sense of purpose and vitality. “She felt kind of useless, and I didn’t want her to feel like she wasn’t wanted anymore… In front of the camera… she’s having a blast,” Tony recalls. His work draws attention to the emotional richness and dignity of life with dementia—images featuring her young shadow, nostalgic mirrors, and vibrant poses present a poignant diary of memory, identity, and love.
The project struck a global chord—covered by outlets such as ABC News, The Independent, Toronto Life, and featured in a TEDx talk, Tony’s series gives a powerful visual voice to caregivers and families facing Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Cutoff is Thursday, September 25, 2025 3:29 pm EDT unless it sells out earlier.
