Western Gateway Park is a 13-acre urban park located at 1200 Locust Street on the western edge of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Opened in 2006 as part of a major downtown redevelopment initiative, the park serves as both a green space and a civic gathering area, marking a prominent entrance into the city's core. The landscape blends open lawns, paved plazas, public art installations, and event infrastructure, creating a flexible venue capable of hosting large-scale festivals, concerts, cultural celebrations, and political rallies. Western Gateway Park is perhaps best known as the home of the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, which features a notable collection of large-scale contemporary sculptures displayed throughout the grounds. The park regularly hosts signature community events such as the Des Moines Arts Festival and Latino Heritage Festival, drawing thousands of attendees annually. Managed in partnership with local organizations and the city, Western Gateway Park plays a central role in Des Moines' cultural identity, economic activity, and year-round public programming.
